Why This Watch

Gérald Genta sketched the Nautilus on a napkin in 1974, modelled on a ship's porthole, and Patek Philippe released it in 1976 as its first steel sports watch. The horizontally embossed dial and the ears at the case sides have barely changed, and the discontinuation of the 5711 in 2021 turned an already scarce watch into one of the most sought-after in the world. Introduced in 1976, the Nautilus has been made in 40 mm for the 5711 and 5811, 42 mm for the 5990 and 5712 at 40 mm, with 35 mm ladies' 7118, powered by caliber 324 S C in the 5711, 26-330 S C in the 5811 and 5712, CH 28-520 C in the 5980 and 5990 chronographs.

The references you will see most often here are the 3700 original, the 5711/1A in blue, white and green, the 5712/1A with its power reserve and moonphase, the 5980 and 5990 chronographs, the 5726 Annual Calendar, and the current white gold 5811/1G.
