Why This Watch

The Explorer was introduced the year Hillary and Tenzing reached the summit of Everest and has barely changed since: a black dial with luminous 3-6-9 numerals, a smooth bezel and an Oyster bracelet. It is the Rolex with the least on its dial and the most history behind it. Introduced in 1953, the Explorer has been made in 36 mm for most of its life, 39 mm from 2010 to 2021, and 36 and 40 mm in the current line, powered by calibers 1016's 1570, then 3000, 3130 and today's 3230.

The references you will see most often here are the 1016 of 1963 to 1989, the 14270 and 114270, the 39 mm 214270, and the current 124270 (36 mm) and 224270 (40 mm).
